Description
Purple Arctic Willow (Salix purpurea), also known as Purple Osier or Basket Willow, is a versatile deciduous shrub valued for its ornamental stems, fine-textured foliage, and adaptability. Native to Europe, northern Africa, and parts of Asia, it has also become popular in North America for its hardiness and erosion-control benefits. This fast-growing shrub typically reaches 10 to 20 feet tall, forming an upright, rounded shape, while the dwarf cultivar ‘Nana’ stays more compact at 3 to 5 feet, making it ideal for smaller landscapes and hedging. Its slender, purple-tinged stems and narrow, blue-green leaves, often arranged in opposite pairs, create a unique visual appeal.
In early spring, small catkins emerge before the leaves, adding seasonal interest. Thriving in full sun to partial shade, Purple Arctic Willow prefers moist, well-drained soil but tolerates wet conditions, making it an excellent choice for rain gardens and erosion-prone areas. It responds well to regular pruning, encouraging dense, controlled growth. Traditionally, its flexible stems have been used for basket-making, reflecting its common name, Basket Willow. With its durability, fast growth, and multi-season interest, Purple Arctic Willow is an excellent choice for hedges, borders, and naturalized plantings.
