Description
Oenothera fruticosa ‘Fireworks’ is a striking North American native, naturally found in prairies and similar habitats from Canada to northern Florida. In spring, its hairy, woody stems emerge from winter rosettes, adorned with narrow, lance-shaped green leaves. From mid-May to mid-June, brilliant red buds burst open into vivid yellow, four-petaled flowers, creating a dazzling display on the upper half of the stems—making it a standout in the late spring garden. Unlike the aggressively weedy Oenothera speciosa, this variety spreads gradually via underground rhizomes. Even after a decade, clumps may reach 6 feet wide but can be easily managed or removed if needed.
Oenothera is Greek for “Wine Drinking”. Legend has it that roots of some species were used as relishes with after-dinner wines.
