Description
Indiangrass (Sorghastrum nutans) adds striking autumn drama with its rich, golden-bronze seed heads that sway gracefully in the landscape. One of the earliest warm-season grasses to set seed, this native prairie tallgrass forms upright clumps of blue-green foliage in summer, transforming to a warm golden hue in fall.
Highly adaptable, Indiangrass thrives in a variety of soils, including heavy clay, and flourishes in dry to medium, well-drained conditions. It requires full sun to reach its full potential and is exceptionally drought-resistant. A valuable resource for wildlife, it provides food and shelter for songbirds and gamebirds. While it can spread aggressively and may not be ideal for small spaces, it pairs beautifully with prairie wildflowers, making it a key component of North American grasslands and restoration plantings.
