Azalea – Viscosum

Description

Native to the eastern United States, Rhododendron viscosum, commonly known as Swamp Azalea, is a hardy, moisture-loving shrub that thrives in wet, well-drained soils and even tolerates salt exposure. As one of the later-blooming native azaleas, it produces highly fragrant white blossoms, making it a perfect choice for planting near pathways where its delightful scent can be enjoyed. In autumn, its lush green foliage transforms into a stunning mix of orange and maroon before dropping for the season.

Part of the Rhododendron genus, which includes over 1,000 species of evergreen and deciduous shrubs, azaleas are versatile additions to mixed borders, woodland gardens, and foundation plantings. They flourish in full sun to partial shade (with shade recommended in warmer climates) and prefer moist, acidic soil for optimal growth.
